License Renewals

Driver’s licenses must be renewed every 5 years (or more frequently depending on age, health and legal status).

These Alberta Drivers License renewals must always be done in person at an Alberta Registry office and you cannot authorize another person to do the service on your behalf.

Please see below for special circumstances for out-of-province applicants.

How to renew your license

Renewing your license is straightforward and easy. 

Typically, your driver’s license will expire on your birthday or every 5 years. In order to renew your license, you must bring:

Renewing Regular Class Licenses

When you renew your license (class 5 for example), you might need to:

 

Afterwards, you will receive a temporary 30 day license. Within 21 business days, you should receive your license card in the mail.

 

Renewing Classes 1 or 4 Licenses

When renewing your class 1 or 4 license, you may be required on select occasions to submit extra documentation such as:

At this time, you must visit our registry office or your local office to have your license replaced.

If you do not receive your license within the 21 day window, you will have to phone the number on the back of the temporary licence.

If you require a new driver’s licence while temporarily outside of Alberta, you will have to follow this link and download the form, and then apply for a new license.

You should first contact the police and file a report that your license has been stolen. You should then apply for a new license through your local registry.

If it expired more than 3 years ago, you will need to pass the written and road tests before a new driver’s licence will be issued.
